Matcha 101

What is matcha and where does it come from?

Matcha is a green tea powder made from shade-grown leaves of the Camellia Sinensis plant. It originated in China and was popularized in Japan by a Buddhist monk in the 12th century, where it was used to provide monks with the energy they needed to meditate for many hours. Unlike other green teas, when consuming matcha, you are consuming the entire leaf, so it has much more nutritional properties and flavors.

Why drink ToroMatcha?

Matcha can fuel your body with healthy energy, and this is basically tied to three of its components:

1. Antioxidants
Matcha is is one of the richest sources of natural antioxidants! Antioxidants are basically your body's ninja warriors that fight off free radicals that arise from pollution, UV rays, and natural by-products of cell functions. All of this fighting power means that antioxidants in matcha improve metabolism, lower cholesterol and blood sugar, fight inflammation, and cleanse the body from toxins.

2. L-Theanine
L-theanine is the "zen" component that makes the energy from matcha feel calming and relaxing. It's an amino acid that is primarily only found in tea and allows you to enter a calm and focused state that we love. L-Theanine is also shown to reduce anxiety and stress - something that we all need, right? So if Buddhist monks could meditate for hours thanks to L-theanine in matcha, so can you power through your day!

3. Caffeine
What's special about the energy from matcha lies in the slow release of caffeine. The caffeine is bound to larger molecules within the leaf powder, so it's released slowly into the bloodstream as these larger molecules get degraded. This creates a sustained energy that lasts several hours, and prevents the spike and crash of energy associated with coffee and energy drinks.

The combination of these three components are the secret sauce to why ToroMatcha is able to fuel your body with healthy and sustained energy!

How much Caffeine in a can of ToroMatcha?

A can of ToroMatcha contains 60mg of Caffeine. In comparison, a cup of coffee has over 80mg. Even though the caffeine content is lower in ToroMatcha, the caffeine is combined with L-theanine and Antioxidants to produce a focused energy that lasts over a period of 6 hours without the spike and crash of caffeine!
